About the duo:
Displaced Nostalgia is a research and performance project led by two diasporic practitioners. Korea/UK-based visual artist JeeMin Kim and Hong Kong/Canada-based novelist Sheung-King Aaron Tang collaborate to experiment with a multidisciplinary practice that reconsiders the paradoxical origins of nostalgia. JeeMin anticipates the possibilities nostalgia might hold within new contexts, while Sheung-King reflects on how nostalgia may also function as an obstacle to change. The project centres on the tension generated by the friction between their perspectives, exploring nostalgia, hope, rest, and identity within a diasporic framework. Through durational performance, they create a ‘space of rest’ within accelerated time, dismantling inherited imperial notions of temporality and inviting audiences to reflect on belonging and migratory experience. Over an extended running time, the performance interweaves physical labour, literary writing, and audience participation, transforming interview methods and lived experience into shared data. The project began in Seoul in 2024 as part of the collective Bad Timekeepers, and has since been presented at WMA Space Hong Kong as part of the Art Basel programme, the University of Hong Kong, and InterAccess in Toronto.
Displaced Nostalgia는 두 명의 디아스포라가 진행하는 리서치 그리고 퍼포먼스 프로젝트이다. 한국/영국 베이스의 시각예술가 김지민(JeeMin Kim)과 홍콩/캐나다 베이스의 소설가 셩-킹 아론 탕(Sheung-King Aaron Tang)이 협업하에 역설적인 향수의 기원을 재조명하는 다분야 예술을 실험한다.지민은 그것이 새로운 맥락에서 가질 수 있는 가능성을 기대하고, 셩-킹은 향수가 변화를 방해하는 요소일 수 있다는 점을 고민한다. 이 프로젝트는 두 사람의 관점이 맞부딪히며 생기는 긴장에 관한 것으로, 디아스포라 맥락 속에서 향수, 희망, 휴식, 정체성을 탐구한다. 이들은 지속적 퍼포먼스를 통해 가속화된 시간 속에서 ‘쉼의 공간’을 마련하고, 기존의 제국주의적 시간 개념을 해체하여 관람자들이 소속감과 이주 경험에 대해 성찰할 수 있도록 초대한다. 이 퍼포먼스는 긴 러닝 타임동안 물리적 노동, 문예적 글쓰기, 관객 참여가 교차하는 지점이며, 인터뷰 기법과 삶의 경험을 공동의 데이터로 전환한다. 본 프로젝트는 2024년 콜렉티브 Bad Timekeepers의 일원으로 서울에서 시작되어, 아트 바젤 프로그램으로 WMA 스페이스 홍콩, 홍콩대학교, 토론토 인터액서스 등에서 발표되었다.
